French legislative elections: Macron's party projected to win 25.7%

Macron's 'Ensemble' coalition is set to become the largest bloc in the National Assembly, but will fall short of an absolute majority.

President Emmanuel Macron's centrist coalition is projected to be the second largest bloc in the French National Assembly after Sunday's legislative elections, with 25.7% of the vote.

Macron's "Ensemble" coalition, which includes his La Republique en Marche (LREM) party, is projected to win between 255 and 295 seats in the 577-member National Assembly, according to exit polls. This would make it the largest bloc in the Assembly, but short of an absolute majority.

The left-wing Nupes coalition, led by Jean-Luc Melenchon, is projected to win between 150 and 190 seats, making it the second largest bloc. The far-right National Rally, led by Marine Le Pen, is projected to win between 80 and 100 seats, its best ever result in a legislative election.

The results of the election are a setback for Macron, who had hoped to win an absolute majority in the National Assembly to give him a strong mandate for his second term. However, the results also show that Macron's coalition remains the most popular force in French politics.
